1 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/06/2015

During breaking, steering, and turning, I hear a "clacking" sound and there is a feeling of something sticking. When the SUV is parked on my drive way, I release the hand break and I can hear a strong "clack" sound. I had times where the breaking system was difficult to press. I took the SUV to pep boys and their evaluation shows that it needs upper and lower ball joints, front brakes, and shock and struts. Steering: terrible and extremely difficult to turn (super hard to steer). Some parts where changed by pep boys in an "urgent" situation. The steering "bearings" ?(a part that goes from the steering wheel down to the motor) was changed. (I have a copy of the work done).

4 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/18/2011

2005 Dodge Durango. In 2007 tierod end on passenger side broke while going down the raod. Luckily there was not an accident and the dealer fixed it for free. In August 2011 we discovered that the brake line was laying on the front axle on the drivers side. This caused the brake line to rub in two and caused brake failure resulting in a crash (which is how the problem as discovered). The towtruck driver also said he picked up a Durango that had the upper and lower ball joint broken causing an accident. The front end of the 2005 Dodge Durango is apprently very poorly designed.

Noise in wheel bearings: had to replace both front wheel hubs due to bad bearings. Was worried about safety and wheel locking up. Finally got replaced at ~89000 but started ~82000 miles as worried about safety and them locking up/falling off. Then was informed by the dealer that the upper and lower joints need replacing. Poor quality for american products as vehicle has only been on the road and in the south with good weather.

9 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/06/2009

I own a 1998 Dodge Durango and back in March of this year I replaced the upper/lower ball joints due to failure. The vehicle had an awful squeaky noise and when taken to the mechanic I was told that I was lucky to still be alive as the balljoints were extremely worn out due to be an ungreaseable type. The repair cost me $650. It has only been 3months since the repair in which the balljoints were replaced with dealer parts and once again, the squeaky sound is back, I've gone back to the mechanic only to be told that once again, the balljoints have failed!! another $650 to fix, this is outrageous!! Dodge must become responsible for the fact that these balljoints continuously fail and they must come up with a greaseable type. In this economy it is very difficult to spend $650 every 2-3 months on balljoints!! at this rate, there will come a point where the tires will fall off the vehicle and cause a death being as these joints don't last as long as they should.

10 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2003 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/07/2008

I noticed my tires were not wearing evenly and I felt and heard a "clunk" noise every time I back out of my parking spot at work. The dealership inspected and said that the upper and lower ball joints of the right and left wheels of my 2003 Dodge Durango must be replaced. I see there are recalls for all previous year Durangos but not the 2003??? the dealership refused to pay for my replacement. I replaced the left side as they were actually broke, my right side still needs to be replaced and are loose and near failure. I request that Dodge reimburse me for the repair as well as replace for free the right side. I would also like two new tires as they now need to be replaced due to the uneven wear and tear.

11 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/06/2008

1999 Dodge Durango. I had the right front ball joint replaced in 2004 and now it is bad again (same one), which indicates that these wear improperly and there should be a recall. If I continue to dive my vehicle, I could get in a series accident or I have to come up with around 800. 00 for a second time on the same part. .

12 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/27/2007

I purchased a 2002 Dodge Durango in jauary of 2007. I have not had any problems with it until I noticed that the truck was pulling to the right. I took the truck to a local service center and they informed me that the upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced. They also informed me that there had been a recall for the upper ball joints for Chrysler. When I contacted the local dealer they told me that the recall had been performed on my truck in 2005. When I informed the service center that the recall had been done they were amazed to find that they ball joints had worn so quickly and the problem with the ball joints "still" presents very dangerous situation for Dodge Durango owners.

16 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/06/2007

I am here to complain about the ball joints on our 1999 Dodge Durango! I just found out on Monday that we have to replace them again. This will be the second time. First time was in 2004 w/ 65k miles on the vehicle. Now 3 years and 30k miles later I have to do it again!! first time cost me around 400 dollars and this time it will be around 325 b/c my friend works at the local shop! this can be very dangerous if the person driving it don't know anything about cars. I have see numerous pictures on the internet of wrecks caused by the failure of the upper and lower ball joints!! we have a 1 yr old and it scares us to know this happens all the time to the 98 and 99 Durango's. The way you can tell these are going bad is when you hit a bump you notice a vibration in the front suspension area continue after you hit the bump. They recalled the ones from 2000-up but not these. There should be a class action lawsuit!!!!! its ridiculous that foreign vehicles are made better than american!! there is no reason for this. Vehicles are expensive enough let alone changing the ball joints every 30k miles!!!!!! our next vehicles will be foreign!!! I hope my comment goes somewhere other than in and out of ears/eyes. I emailed Dodge on Monday and have yet to hear back!! probably won't!! thanks for your time and website!!!!!!!!!.

17 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2003 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/26/2007

I am currently experiencing a thumping or throttle on the vehicle when I step on the brakes. It occurs in the front of the vehicle on driver's side. I have had the brakes replaced , but this noise still occurs. I have been advised by r&s strauss mechanic that it appeared to be the ball joint/arm. He has encountered many Durangos experiencing this problem and advised to seek dealer for repairs since he wa s aware of the accidents that have occurred. Wanted to notify your office and other drivers if experiencing similar problems. It appeared that this defect needed to be recalled.

18 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

20 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2001 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/15/2007

My vehicle is 6 years old, about 2 months ago I noticed my car began vibrating really badly and my tires were wearing flat on the drivers side. I took my Durango to the 76 service station and they inspected my vehicle and I was told that my right front wheel bearing was worn, my front ball joints were worn and the sway bar bushings were worn very badly as well as the upper control arms were bad. I have only seen recalls on the vehicles with 4x4 but I think the 4x2 models need to also be inspected. This is not normal wear for a vehicle only being 6 years old and driven only 14,280 a year. I cant afford to pay the 1500 dollars that was quoted to have it fixed, so now it sits unless it has to be used, because I am afraid that my front tire is going to fall off.

21 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2001 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Durango. The contact received a recall notice in March of 2007 for the front ball joints. She immediately had the vehicle repaired. 25 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/01/2006

: the contact stated while driving 10 mph, the passenger side tire detached from the lower part of the suspension. The tie rod and spindle both fractured. This caused the vehicle to immediately fall to the right, and the steering wheel to spin back, which injured the left hand of the contact. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who determined that the front right lower ball joint had separated. The manufacturer was also notified. Updated 01/26/07.

28 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 09/08/2006

We bought our Durango used in Feb 06. Feb 20th took it to dealership because front brakes were locking up ( replaced pads and had rotors resurfaced - $381. 00). On Sep. 9,06 took it in because the front end was vibrating terribly and was told that the upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced. At that time, the vehicle had 95,328 mi. We had over $891. 83 in repairs and alignment and had to turn around and have the tires replaced because of excessive wear due to the defective ball joints ( another $800+).

29 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 09/05/2006

I noticed a loud clunking sound coming from the front end of my 1999 Dodge Durango. Upon having it inspected, I was advised that the upper and lower ball joints on both sides were no good, due to a lack of lubrication caused by faulty seals. The mechanic advised me that while other years of the Durango had been recalled for the same problem, mine did not have a recall. However, I was advised that the damaged ball joints are subject to failure, which could cause the entire front wheel assembly to come off the car. In researching this problem, I found that the problem is just as common in the 1999 model years as other (recalled) years. Apparently, there have not yet been enough injuries or deaths yet from 1999 year vehicles. Sure hope I'm not one of the stats that finally forces a recall.

30 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/02/2006

I have been informed by my Dodge dealer that my 1998 Dodge Durango needs to have the ball joints replaced for the second time. The vehicle currently has 120,000 miles on it. They were replaced the first time at 70,000 miles at my expense. Dodge has refused to participate financially on either occasion. Since ball joints are an integral part of the steering system I consider this a safety issue. I also think the failure rate on these parts is unacceptable. I do know Dodge has issued recalls on later model Durango's for this same issue. The vehicle is not used off road and has been meticulously serviced according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Please help.

31 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/25/2006

I purchased a 1998 Dodge Durango from a small car dealership in 2004. It only had 50k miles on it. It now has 75k miles on it. I was told before a trip that my truck had some "play". Not knowing what that was, I continued to drive it. I am now told that it is going to cost me $1000 to fix it and then I would need to replace the tires only have 5k miles on them. I am looking at a 2k dollar fix! one mechanic told me they were extremely unsafe! I have 3 small children and this is our main vehicle. How many lives are they going to put in danger for the Durango owners (1998-1999)? we have the same ball joint problems as the 2000-2003 owners. I have researched the internet and forums and have seen thousands of complaints so why has nothing been done? I do not have $2000 dollars to put into a truck that shouldn't have anything but minor things with the mileage and just normal driving. This is unsafe and is putting many lives in danger. Are they going to wait to get medical bills and funeral expenses when an entire family loses their lives from the truck rolling? what happens to the ones who keep driving it, unaware what the "play" is? they will be the ones possible losing their lives or taking someone else's! I see another class action law suite coming on!!!.

32 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/15/2006

Bought my Durango new in may 1998. The automatic transmission started shifting improperly in July 2000. Took it to a Dodge dealer because it was still under warranty (31,418 miles). They dropped the transmission pan and pronounced it doa (pan was full of metal shavings). Should have seen the writing on the wall but I loved this vehicle. Took it to an inspection station for safety & emissions tests in may of 2006. It failed for bad ball joints. I asked the manager why his mechanics seemed to pay special attention to the front end during inspection and his reply was it was very common to find bad ball joints on approx. 50% of all 1998-2000 Durangos. Had my mechanic replace upper & lower ball joints, both sides, at 74,064 miles, to the tune of $701 plus tax. I then started hearing about other Durango owners with similar ball joint woes. I went online and started researching. Found a site where folks like myself with the same ball joint problems, some with accidents, were trying to get NHTSA to do something. I guess people actually have to die first before NHTSA will step in and tell an auto manufacturer they need to fix their faulty products. I also learned that the 1998-2000 Durangos were built on the Dodge dakota pickup chassis. A dakota weighs about 4,600 lbs. While a Durango 4x4 weighs in at 6,400 lbs. It's no wonder the 1998-2000 Durango front-ends were falling apart. Seriously, what kind of idiot engineers does Dodge have working for them. Sometime later I heard that Dodge rushed the Durango into production in 1998 to compete for the SUV market bucks and didn't have time to engineer a new chassis so they just modified the dakota chassis without beefing it up. When people started to complain about ball joints and such, they built a whole new chassis for Durangos in 2001. I stumbled across this site today while researching another vehicle I'm thinking about buying.

33 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/12/2006

Having noticed excessive front tire wear & poor steering performance I took my 1999 Dodge Durango (78000 miles) in for alignment/tire balance. Was told that the problem was that the upper & lower ball joints were shot. Was forced to replace the ball joints & tires (less than 25k on the tires) to the tune of $1200. 00.

34 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/28/2006

After paying $1500 to replace the upper and lower ball joints on our recently purchased Durango, I discovered there was a recall on the upper ball joint for Durangos. When I inquired with dealer about a possible reimbursement for the parts recalled I was notified that the recall did not apply to our vehicle year, it only applied to 2000-2003 model years. Although our 1998 model encountered the same problem as the recalled vehicles, daimler Chrysler wasn't willing to reimburse or do anything for us. I found this very disappointing considering this is the fourth Dodge we've owned and currently both our vehicles are Dodge makes. With the enormous number of documented complaints it seems reasonable to expect the NHTSA to demand daimler Chrysler recall the 1998 and 1999 Durangos for ball joint problems as well.

35 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/05/2006

Front end began vibrating. Took to dealer and was told both the upper and lower ball joints are worn out and need replaced. If not replaced, entire suspension is in danger. Repair to exceed $700. I called Chrysler for help in paying for repairs as I've been a loyal Chrysler consumer for 16 years - having purchased 4 Chrysler vehicles. Ball joint failure on these vehicles is a well documented problem. Chrsyler refused to help because I bought the vehicle from a bank and not the dealer - the first Chrysler vehicle I've purchased that did not come direct for the dealer.
